"There are many testimonials as to why people join Crossfit. For some it's to look good, others strive for wellness. One may immediately wonder why I didn't say fitness. For those of us in our mid to upper forties the realization of mortality begins to set in. No longer can we compete with
athletes that are twenty years our junior. Joining a program such as Crossfit has enabled me to turn fitness into wellness while feeling like I am part of a brotherhood, something that I haven't felt in over twenty five years.

I started Crossfit at the end of April this year. I must admit that this was intimidating especially since I used to drive by the Crossfit classes and saw the level of intensity and conditioning of a number of the participants. Coach Thompson put me at ease and explained that anyone could
be part of Crossfit Quantico as long as they make an effort, listen to the coaches, and have a good attitude. I explained that my goal was to lose weight and get in shape. Following that meeting I went and saw my physician. I had a complete physical and explained the type of program that I was about to embark on. My physical results were worse than I expected. The following were my statistics.

Height- 6"1"
Weight- 210 lbs
Cholesterol level- 400
Triglycerides- 2000 (yes that wasn't a typo)
Fat deposits on my liver

My first Crossfit day was a mixed experience. My ego thought I should be in the advanced class, but my physical ability was to the contrary. Twenty five years ago I ran the 800m in under a minute fifty, ran 400m in 48.07 seconds, and ran Division I cross country and bench pressed 250 lbs. Despite my mental picture of the past Coach Thompson put me into the beginner's class. I was at first disappointed, but quickly realized that it was the right thing. For seven weeks I forced myself to go out three to four times a week. During that initial "start up" I found myself constantly sore and frustrated that I wasn't losing any weight. Suddenly, during week
eight my weight began to change and my physical abilities began to improve. It was around that time I moved up to the advanced class. Moving up to the advanced class became sort of a badge of honor for me, so much so that I ventured to buy a Crossfit Quantico T-shirt. I just celebrated my six month anniversary being with Crossfit Quantico. I just had my physical and was very pleased with my progress. My level of wellness has changed to.

Height- 6'1"
Weight- 190 lbs
Cholesterol level- 226
Triglycerides- 446
Fat deposits on the liver- gone

Crossfit has been great journey that I look forward to continuing being part of in the future. Even though I realize that I cannot compete with the athletes twenty years my junior, I feel like I am part of a great team that supports the success of each other. The brotherhood of Crossfit Quantico is a significant factor in my wellness that spills over to my work and my ability to be able to honor my life commitment as a husband and father to my wife and three great kids.

I want to extend my thanks to all of Quantico Crossfit and I wish all of you the best for the upcoming New Year.

Sincerely,
Steve Manchester"
